The Guqin (Chinese seven-stringed zithers) is the most enduring type of musical instrument in the history of the Chinese people, with a recorded history of over 3,000 years; it was venerated by members of the cultured elite in ancient China. The art of the Guqin itself is rich and singular accomplishment, and becoming one of the main musical symbol of the spirit of ancient Chinese culture. It has even been praised by many Western scholars as the musical form the best merges abstraction and philosophy. In November 2003, the Guqin was declared by UNESCO a ‘representative work of humanity’s oral and intangible heritage ‘.

The Guqin in this exhibition with their dates of excavation or manufacture covering over 2,000 years from the Western Han Dynasty to the Republic of China Era. Some of them have profound origins and associations with Tan Sitong and Zuo zongtang. They have a high collection value and deep significance for culture.
